In Canada, more than 75% of short-term work disabilities can be attributed to depression, which is a psychological state triggered by various distress factors (burnout being a form of depression). Thankfully, employers can significantly influence employees’ health.

This statistic for stress at work is a nuisance for professor of psychology at Université de Montréal and workplace stress specialist Luc Brunet.

“What is most essential for an employer is to take care of their employees’ health”, he states. There is no miracle recipe, but managing work relationships in a balanced way has a meaningful effect on employees’ psychological health.

When receiving adequate support, workers are able to thrive and be fully productive. If, to the contrary, they do not receive recognition and support from their employer, a sense of injustice that can ensue, which is fertile ground for depression.

Psychological health problems can lead to psychosomatic problems like tachycardia, weight gain or loss, agoraphobia, panic attacks, and, most of all, insomnia.

“Opening a gym is insufficient for maintaining employee health if they are ill-supported by bad leadership. Employees need an incentive in order to get engaged at work”, says Brunet.
